Welcome to the world of traditions and tastes of Azerbaijan
Winemaking
Over the past 200–300 years, winemaking in Azerbaijan has evolved from a traditional craft into a significant industry with well-defined regional traditions. In the 19th century in particular, wine-producing regions such as Shamakhi, Goygol, Karabakh, and Ganja began making not only table wines but also refined dessert wines from local berries.
During the rule of the Qajar dynasty and the later period of the Afsharids, dessert wines were regarded as symbols of prosperity and sophistication in Azerbaijani khanates. These aromatic, rich, berry-based dessert drinks were served in the palaces of khans and shahs during banquets, celebrations, and diplomatic receptions. Made from cherry, cornelian cherry, mulberry, and other native fruits, they reflected both the abundance and the elegance of the region’s culinary heritage.
